WINNIE Gets Labeled, UK Style

Published: May 19, 2007 - 6:04pm | Permalink | Comments (4)

After moving back to Philadelphia and getting my PA plates, I was finally able to order a British plate for the front of my car. I'm not one for vanity plates, but in this case, I don't mind.

WINNIE 008

WINNIE, as in Winnie Cooper from the Wonder Years. I had a crush on Winnie Cooper growing up, so it wasn't difficult finding a name for the car. 008 is just a damn good number. Some might think it's childish to name a car, but I'm a bit superstitous when it comes to these things, I believe a car needs to be named in order for it to have a good life. I've been lucky this far with my cars over the years, so why stop now?

My previous cars were named: "Triple X" and "Prince-s." The first being an ironic joke, because it wasn't so sexy, and the latter named after an amazing Sebadoh song.

What are some names you've named your cars?

I had an '87 Monte Carlo named 'Honey Brown'... and a '01 PT Cruiser named 'Big Sexy'. Winnie Cooper was such a babe.

All my cars have had the same name. The '86 Jetta was Lola; the '86 Corolla was Lola; the '00 Stratus, again, Lola. Perhaps I'd spend more time naming my cars, but the truth is, I kind of hate them. And, well, they kind of hate me.

My first car, a 1984 Renault Encore, was named Loretta the Red Renault after the saleswoman who sold it to us. I have great memories of that car, but I hope the saleswoman held up better. Some of my other cars were given names but they didn't stick like Loretta did to that Renault. I've never named my current Jetta. She is what she is.

Jim> I think you should name the Jetta "HOTT Turbo," for the obvious reasons. OR after the pizza guy from Angelico!
